剛來到美國，沒有社會安全號碼（Social Security Number），又沒有信用記錄，似乎很難申請到信用卡。但是Harvard Employees Credit Union提供的信用卡服務，只要有護照跟Harvard ID，就可以辦囉！

值得注意的是，Costco只收Debit Card（比如銀行的提款卡，即刷即從銀行帳戶扣款）、American Express信用卡與現金，不收VISA或MasterCard信用卡。所以還沒有American Express信用卡的新生在出發前一天，請確認支票存款帳戶內有足夠的現金。

Harvard Habitat for Humanity's Annual Stuff Sale
THE STUFF SALES ARE COMING! THE STUFF SALES ARE COMING! Harvard
Habitat for Humanity is holding its biggest yard sale ever on the
Science Center lawn over four consecutive weekends. Goods include
futons, couches, swivel chairs, dressers, beds, rugs, mirrors, ironing
boards, kitchen tables, appliances and 1,000 more items. We thought
we got a lot of good stuff in 2006, but the volume and quality of the
2007 harvest is the best yet! The reasonable prices support HHH's
mission to provide housing for the homeless. Last year they sold 225
truckloads! This represented over 200 tons diverted from disposal.
This year's Stuff Sales will occur on the dates below. If you want to
arrange a private showing, please email.
Please note that there are no sales at Hingham Street near Western

and Surplus Center. When here for Thursday's Surplus Distribution,
follow the parking monitors direction and park only in designated

臨上飛機前的小叮嚀
親愛的新生與訪問學者，
時入八月，距離各位登上飛機前來波士頓的日子也更近了。希望同學會網站上的諸多資訊（標籤：新生指南）對各位預備遠行能有幫助。
在這裡，我們再補充一些小叮嚀，提供臨行前的參考。
1. 打包行李的時候，請注意行李尺寸與重量的限制。以經濟艙為例，目前美籍航空公司無論國內或國際的托運行李（Checked-in luggage）限重大多是2件，每件50磅（23公斤）。如果各位航程中的國際航段是搭乘中華航空，儘管中華航空自營的航段可以托運每件70磅（32公斤），總共兩件的托運行李，但是銜接其後的美國國內航段還是遵守只能運送每件50磅（23公斤），共2件的規定。這項規定登載於中華航空網頁。因此，還是請各位打包托運行李時，就是按照每件50磅（23公斤），共2件的原則。托運行李不得上鎖，安檢人員有權破壞行李鎖以進行安檢。
2. 各種錢財、貴重物品、昂貴電子用品等等，請裝載隨身行李攜帶上機。若有膠狀與液態用品要攜帶上機，請參照相關規定以可密封的透明塑膠袋裝好。
3. 登機行李中請裝好護照、綠卡（美國永久居民）、入學許可（學生）、I-20（學生）、DS-2019（訪問學者）、美金旅行支票與現金（準備一些小面額鈔票與Quarter硬幣方便打公共電話）、1套換洗衣物與1個可以裝髒衣服的塑膠袋（以防航班有變）、健保卡。
4. 中華民國駕照、國際駕照、無肇事證明（買車時可用以降低保費），其他文件可以放在托運行李。
5. 請確定你的飛航行程已經輸入航空公司飛行常客計畫會員帳號。如果訂票時沒有請旅行社或是航空公司輸入時，可以在機場報到時請地勤人員輸入，或是在行程完成的6個月內將登機證傳真或郵寄到航空公司辦理補登錄，以累積里程。以從美國旅行為主的角度來看，中華航空航班的哩程建議累積到西北航空或是達美航空，長榮航空航班的哩程建議累積到大陸航空，新加坡航空與全日空航班的哩程建議累積到聯合航空，國泰航空與日本航空航班的哩程建議累積到美國航空；西北航空、大陸航空、達美航空三者同屬天合聯盟，搭乘其中任何一家，都可以將飛行哩程累積到任一其他家。
6. 劃位前請先到http://www.seatguru.com查閱搭乘航機的座位建議。
7. 請在航班起飛時間前兩小時到達機場櫃臺報到。現在大多是電子機票，只要出示護照就可以辦理報到劃位。如果四肢健康，並願意在必要時隨同空服人員疏散，可以請求地勤人員幫忙劃機艙門旁邊的Exit Row，這樣座位前方會有比較大的空間。
8. 出境查驗時出示登機證與護照即可。無論在臺灣、香港、美國、日本，隨身攜帶的電腦都需要在過安檢時拿出來單獨放一個籃子裡受檢。
9. 從機艙門關閉到飛機平飛（安全帶警示燈熄滅）以前，以及開始下降（安全帶警示燈開啟）到飛機降落地面前請勿開啟任何電子用品（請勿在起降時拍照！），以免違反各國民航法規。
10. 在飛機上，可以將隨身行李放在座位前方當作腳靠，比較好睡。起降時請聽從空服人員只是將放置地面的隨身行李放在前方座位下的空間（坐Exit Row的請放在座位上方行李艙）
11. 在飛機上請盡量多補充水分。進餐時或餐後可小酌含酒精飲料，以利入睡。
12. 如果你具有各航空公司可以使用貴賓室的會員等級，或是搭乘商務艙，可以在轉機前，利用時間使用貴賓室淋浴間，有助於消除疲勞。
13. 如果飛行中途有任何身體不適，請告訴空服人員處理。旅程中若有任何的醫療單據，請收好，可以依照相關規定跟健保局申請自墊醫療費用核退。
14. 如果你買機票的信用卡有一定金額的旅行保險條款，請在上飛機前要詳閱清楚。如果航班因為機械故障、航班調度不良等等人為因素而有變動，且沒有提供必要的食宿補償或航班變更，請一定要跟航空公司地勤索取正式班機取消或變動證明。可以在該事件發生後使用信用卡條款規定的金額消費，並且在事後跟信用卡公司辦理核退，也向航空公司申訴要求賠償。若是航班因為天氣等等不可抗力因素而有變動，航空公司就沒有任何提供食宿或賠償的義務。
15. 在飛抵美國前，空服員會發放入境要填寫申報的表格：白色的I-94 Form（美國公民與永久居民不須填寫）與藍色的Custom Declaration。Custom Declaration上請誠實填寫攜帶入境美國的食品以及各項貨幣與有價證券金額（金額很大也沒關係，不會被扣減行政規費或刁難）。若有不實又被查到，美國海關會當場沒入。
16. 到達美國的第一個機場，要清關。下飛機到清關之前不得使用手機。你若不具有美國公民或永久居民，請帶著I-94 、Custom Declaration、護照、I-20（學生）或DS-2019（訪問學者）到移民局櫃臺前排隊，依序接受詢問與查驗。移民局官員會在查驗後決定核准你停留美國的時間。應答時請帶著自然大方的笑容，沒有做錯事不用不好意思。若是該官員態度惡劣，請記下他的姓名，可以當場請他的長官（supervisor）處理。查驗完成後，移民局官員會將I-94釘在護照內頁（爾後離開美國，在機場報到時要交給航空公司地勤人員）。
17. 移民局查驗結束以後，請去拿個行李推車去行李轉盤拿托運行李，然後推著去海關受檢。一樣，自然大方的微笑與態度即可。誠實回答。檢查結束之後，將托運行李送進轉運行李托運處之後，就可依照航班狀況螢幕上所顯示的下一班飛機登機門資訊，到該登機門預備登機。若是此時發現因為航班延遲或是其他因素造成快要來不及去登機下一航班，請立刻跟航空公司地勤連絡處理（特別是從洛杉磯或是芝加哥轉機的要注意！）。
18. 如果發現到達波士頓機場的時間有變，請立刻跟接機的朋友連絡。公共電話也可以請對方付費（禮貌上以後再還人家），規則請見公共電話上的說明。
19. 從波士頓機場到哈佛各校區附近的計程車資（連同15%小費）約$30-40。如果司機服務不好，可以降低小費。
20. 各可能轉機站的中華民國駐外機構緊急求助電話，必要時可以撥打尋求協助：
